Corporate Credit Records a Significant Expansion Rate

Thursday, 06 July 2023
  • The performance of the credit portfolio has a positive impact on the assets of the CBI.

The corporate or private sector portfolio maintains a positive expansion rate, reaching USD 58.99 billion, which represents a USD 2.88 billion or 5.1% increase compared to May 2022, according to the results of the Banking Activity Report (IAB, for its acronym in Spanish) issued by the Superintendency of Banks of Panama (SBP).

The report shows that almost all segments displayed increases in the credit portfolio, with the corporate component showing the greatest growth. Similarly, mining and quarrying (20.1%), agriculture (8.6%), commerce (8.3), among other activities, recorded favorable performances.

The foregoing demonstrates that lending by corporate banking to the private sector is growing.

The assets of the International Banking Center (CBI) totaled USD 140.90 billion, representing an increase of USD 4.31 billion or 3.1% compared to May 2022. This is the result, to a large extent, of the growing net credit portfolio (7.4%) and the securities component (5.1%).

On the other hand, CBI profits reached USD 1.17 billion, reflecting a 44.7% growth compared to May 2022, when it totaled USD 808 million.

Regarding liquidity and solvency indicators, they recorded well-heeled positions above their regulatory limits of 58.3% and 15.5%, respectively. This means that banks have maintained ratios above the regulatory minimums (30% and 8%).
